What Is A Business Analytics Capability Maturity Model?

Maturity models are a way for you to measure how advanced your capabilities are with specific organization functions. There are many kinds of maturity models but they all pretty much do the same thing. They define expectations of a certain level of competence with a certain capability. In our case, it’s business analytics.

There is no industry standard capability maturity model for business analytics. What follows is how I think about capability maturity. Reporting is at the bottom. Most organizations are at the reporting level. The sad thing is, most organizations are stuck at this low level and are quite happy. They never bother to look into what is really possible with data now a days.

If you are a manager, I’d strongly encourage you to find a maturity model you like and use it to measure the progress of your analytics. Not just measure it but make sure you’re making stuff move up and to the right.

When it comes to modern analytics, it’s dangerous to stand still.
